In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha—an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.

Average plot. Check. Discount leading actor and actress. Check. Incredible CGI. Check. The CGI is the real winner here. I have seen better movies but I have also seen much worse. As far as CGI...the best I have seen. It gives the impression that most of the work went into the CGI and alien characters design than into the actual writing. Not too bad a movie.
  • Great effects, light on everything else

So wanted to like this after Fifth Element, but just doesn't cut it. Both the leads are like limp lettuces and you certainly don't believe DeHann is some super agent.
  • Waste of time and money, run away

This was so bad they should offer refunds.
  • Ugh!

I am a very easy going consumer and didn’t have high expectations but this was so dumb I actually turned it off ½ way through, which I never do. Really dumb and a very big disappointment. Find something, anything else, else in the genre to watch.
  • 2 hours of my life I won’t get back...

Worst movie ever. Take parts from every great sci-fi movie, butcher them, throw it all together with no plot and that’s the movie. Did I mention it stole 2 hours of my life? Do yourself a favor, pass on this.
  • Terrible Main Characters

The actors leading this film were never able to be convincing as elite soldiers. The acting was bad and goofy, awkward dialogue, and in no way making you care if they succeed. What’s left is to ignore the acting and limited plot and enjoy the visual feast - which is gorgeous, but not enough to carry the film.
  • Straight garbage.

This movie was terrible. The story was ridiculous and boring, covered up with beautiful visuals. DeHaan and Delevigne have absolutely no chemistry. Supposedly the director wanted to make this movie decades ago, but couldn't get the rights. So he made The Fifth Element instead. You can sort of feel that in the movie. The problem is that Fifth Element is a vastly better film. Skip this and watch Fifth Element.
  • Another good book ruined.

The special effects are amazing but the acting, directing and screenwriting was so disappointing. It just just amazes me how Hollywood just continues to take a great story and ruin it.

  • A Lot Better than Expected

From the commercial reviewers one might expect this film to be a disaster, but that would be very wrong. This is epic, hope-filled sci-fi at it's best. It's much akin to what Steven Spielberg used to do, but seems to have forgotten: a simple storyline with just enough twists and turns to keep it from being entirely predictable, a pair of heroes who love and fight when the odds are against them, a bright future stained by bureaucracy and bad choices at high levels, and a relentlessly fast paced series of adventures populated by quirky aliens (mostly friendly) and people (also mostly friendly) as well as some incredible scenery. I for one think the negative reviewers are out of their minds: this is an absolutely first class popcorn movie. I'm hoping for sequels.
